Our Code of Conduct
Introduction
The people of Code Your Future welcome you to our community.
At CYF, we want a community where everyone feels welcome and safe. A friendly, inclusive, fun, and welcoming environment is good for learning and collaboration. For this reason, we don't tolerate discrimination or harassment in our community.
To make it as clear as possible - we do not tolerate discrimination against:
- age
- appearance
- beliefs, religion
- body size
- colour, ethnicity, race
- disability, mental illness
- education
- gender reassignment, identity and expression
- immigration status
- level of coding experience/ level of working experience
- nationality
- neurodiversity
- sex
- sexual orientation
- social class
- or other identity markers.
Below you will find our expectations and what happens when you don't follow our code of conduct.
Values and Working Principles
All members of our community should adhere to our values and working principles. Anybody who does not will receive a warning. Repeated warnings, without improvements, could lead to being asked to leave the community.
Being a good community member
These are our expectations for everyone in our community. Please begin by thinking about and agreeing with the following statements:
- I will be welcoming to everyone
- I will be patient and open to learning from everyone around me
- I will treat everyone with respect
- I will be mindful of the needs and boundaries of others
- I will find ways to collaborate, especially when there is disagreement
- I will be helpful
- I will try to have fun
Examples of behaviour that contributes to a positive environment for our community include:
- Showing empathy and kindness toward other people
- Respecting differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences
- Giving, accepting and using feedback
- Assume people have good intentions, even when it’s not clear
- Accepting responsibility and apologising for mistakes
- Learning from mistakes
- Thinking of others as well as ourselves
- Reporting concerns
- Being aware of how your actions affect others. If it makes someone uncomfortable, stop.
- Use the names and pronouns people give you. If you are unsure, please ask.
- Following professional boundaries, in-person or online.*

I agree to maintain the Code of Conduct in CodeYourFuture spaces, including:
- During class - in-person and online
- At events or social activities - both in-person and online
- In online workspaces; like Slack, GitHub, Google Workspace
- On social media
- In co-working spaces
Unwanted behaviour
Examples of unwanted behaviour may include:
- Making jokes at others' expense
- Disrupting group events repeatedly
- Publishing someone else's private emails, address, or other personal information on purpose
- Targeting people on the basis of their identity
- Sharing personal details about someone else without their consent
- Making trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
- Not using people’s correct pronouns. Do not misgender others or use “dead” or rejected names on purpose
- Using sexualised language or imagery, making sexual advances
- Touching other people without consent. Never continue after a request to stop. Harassment could lead to police involvement
- Excluding others on purpose
- Introducing sexual images, language, or behaviour
- Other conduct which could be inappropriate in a professional setting on purpose
This list is not exhaustive. Any behaviour that goes against CodeYourFuture values is not tolerated. Even if the behaviour is not meant to offend or intimidate. Any behaviour that intends to hurt, isolate or exclude another person is unacceptable.
Criminal behaviour is not tolerated
Committing crimes in or against our community is not allowed. Code Your Future will report criminal behaviour to the police.
Reporting
If you see or experience a breach of this code, please discuss it with a member of CYF staff.
If someone tells you something of concern, please take a note of what they said. Use their own words, where possible. Remember, you don’t need to use someones name to report a concern.
If you do not get a response within a week, please email the community safety team at cs@codeyourfuture.io
Enforcement
Anyone asked to stop unwanted behaviour must stop immediately.
If a community member breaks this code, we will take action.
This action may include:
- Investigation
- Mediation
- A temporary ban
- A permanent ban
