Having previously worked as a virtual tech career mentor, Ayomide was drawn to CYF’s mission of creating impact by delivering fre technical training in a community sharing their knowledge.

“I thought it would be nice to join an organisation that allows me to have a wider reach and make better impact to the community,” Ayomide explains.

A desire to help more people.

His desire to expand their mentoring reach has blossomed into a meaningful connection with the CYF community.

Working with the Introduction to Programming (ITP) and Introduction to Digital (ITD) programs, Ayomide and his team provide essential guidance to people from the start of their learning journeys with CodeYourFuture.

At CodeYourFuture, personal support is key to learning.

His role involves personal support for every student, ensuring they gain a solid programming and software development foundation.

“We hand-hold each mentee, making sure they get the best of the program and have the best understanding of the course throughout,” says Ayomide. A typical week involves coordinating weekend classes, responding to student questions on Slack, reviewing code, and directing learners who need support.

CYF is a diverse community.

Ayomide believes what makes CYF unique is its diverse community of learners.

“Joining CYF as a volunteer allows me to meet with so many people from different areas of life. These could be refugees, asylum seekers, people who were unemployed for a long time and currently fighting to make changes to their life,” Ayomide shares. “Volunteering here reminds me that humans are amazing and we can get what we set our hearts to.”

Transitioning from solo mentoring to being part of a larger community has been particularly rewarding. “I’ve always been a solo mentor, mentoring people on my own virtually via online platforms. I’ve felt awesome having to do that with other people and hearing different views from volunteers and mentees about various concepts,” reflects Ayomide.

CYF is a supportive community.

CodeYourFuture’s commitment to supporting its volunteers has made the experience even more meaningful. “CYF community is very helpful and intentional with helping everyone,” Ayomide notes. “They understand that volunteers are important people and try to make volunteering very easy for us. They have a very structured program, clearly documented steps, and amazing personnel who are open to getting feedback and improving.”

For those considering volunteering with CodeYourFuture, Ayomide’s advice is straightforward: “Just do it. You’ll feel great, get to connect with other awesome volunteers and really amazing mentees.”

Making an impact.

The impact of volunteering at CodeYourFuture extends beyond teaching coding skills.

Volunteers benefit from connecting with professionals across various fields, engaging in meaningful discussions, and continuously learning from both mentees and fellow volunteers. As Ayomide puts it, “The community feels very positive and makes it easy to thrive.”

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of volunteering at CYF is witnessing the growth of students. Ayomide says, “The most fun thing is watching mentees get better and making progress under your direct guidance, meeting new people from different parts of life and probably sharing a pizza together.”
